Great drums/synths, could be mixed better

I love the feedback synth that comes in the middle of the sample! The rest of the synths are solid, and the drum programming sounds tightly wound around the rest of the track.

The overall mixing seems a little weaker than it should be though - namely the sample from sin city is too loud. When it cuts out and the synths/drums fully kick in, there's no "oomph," it instead feels like it LOSES speed because of how overpowering the sample seemed (even though he was speaking in a low, quiet voice). The entire track seems to lack some of that overall. You can tell it should be powerful...but some of the synths/drums just aren't loud enough and don't hit hard enough.

Great songwriting, good melodies/synth selection, but would benefit a lot from better mixing.

Quarl responds:

ar, good review! I really liked the part where you talked about the mix. That was my favorite. I thought I could have used more feed back on the drums though. All in all, I'll give this review a 9 and a 5. You know... to balance out all the zero voters.

Excellent parts, solid production

Dig the synths big time! The one that starts protruding from the right in the mix about halfway through sounds cool as hell. They all mix together well both melodically and texturally.

The drums seem almost there, something about them isn't quite hitting though. The writing seems cool, the overall sound to them blends in well, the little breaks w/cymbals are well-written...just something I can't quiteplace that isn't quite bringing it together for me. They just sound a little too seperated from the rest of the mix. They're still quite good overall though.

I actually had this originally as an 8, but after having it on loop for the duration of the loop I started liking it more and more. I'll def be checking out your other stuff on here.

Great Synth!

The lead synth mixing/writing is badass. The overlaying melodies and pitch shifting create a lot of movement, but it's all tied together very well. Great job with layering/mixing!

As with a lot of drum n bass, you have the drums/bass placed out to simply carry the melody. The melodies are definitely strong enough to have the song structured out in that sense, but the drums end up being a little weak overall. The snare hit is barely audible, and the kit in general sounds a bit muddled w/the bass.

Also, why'd you end it there?? I wanted to hear more experimentation on that melody! It's like you were in the middle of a kickass guitar solo and then just stopped.

Again though, great job overall. Just coulda used a bit more touching up with drums...and about a minute or two of song tacked on to it!

Badass!

This is cool as shit! Don't hear much stuff that's this original and well done too often. The production is awesome, the distorting/mixing sounds great, and the glitchy percussion stuff mixes in really damn well.

Def one of the more interesting and well done songs I've heard on NG

LJCoffee responds:

Wow Creamy-T, thanks for saying so.

I liked this one and I had a lot of fun making it.

Thanks for your comments!

Well-done experimental

Love the experimental stuff when it's well done! The triplets and offbeat hits you kept throwing in gave a surprisingly well-balanced unpredictable edge to the track. The rhythm changes kept the track interesting despite there being no real melody.

The tempo change later in the song though was a bit too much for me. It sounded a bit forced and seemed to cut up what you had going. The transition itself was a bit muddled unfortunately.

Other than that, the sound production/mixing was delicately done. The mix of percussion didn't get annoying or overpowering, as can definitely happen in tracks like this. Great job overall!

You might like my tracks Broken Bones and Lemonsalt, let me know what you think if you get a chance.

LJCoffee responds:

I'm not familiar with either Broken Bones or Lemonsalt but I'll put them on my "keep an eye out for it" list.

This was just another in a series of experiments that end up getting posted on NG.

Thank you for taking the time to review it and I'll definitely try to incorporate all of the advice into the next track(s).

Original and Moody

I was not expecting the vocals on this - but they work quite well with the track. Very cool mood - blends in great with the glitch drums.

As usual with your tracks, this was mixed well and produced with expertise and personality. Good work!

Also, I'm sure you get plenty of requests, but please drop me a review when you get time (lemonsalt is the newest atm). You reviewed a track of mine awhile back and you gave some very helpful feedback; I'd be curious as to what you have to say.

reviewed you latest tune

Dull

The writing is decent enough. Cool drum loop, cool melodies...it's just all a bit repetetive. It doesn't help that the instruments sound weak as well.

You need more oomph somewhere. Turn up the drums! Turn up the melody! It's not just a "volume" issue (as I could turn up my speakers obviously), it's an issue of it not sounding powerful enough. Listen to it at a lower volume and compare it to other songs at low volume. A well-mixed track will still have power to it.

Fortunatley that's mostly a matter of experience/software familiarity. Tweak the mix, bump up the EQ, use some compressio - it'll really give the track some life.

Drakanious responds:

Thanks for the tip regarding mastering, but how would you suggest that I make this track less repetitive?

Fruityloopy to the Max

Melodies decent, but the samples/mixing is weak. The synth bass or whatever is just goofy and repetetive, nothing blends well, and the drum samples are weak by themselves.

Try experimenting more with sounds. Put some mastering/mixing on the drums to get more out of them.

The arrangement is a bit weak too - just kind of moves from random part to random part without anything defining coming out of it. They aren't bad by themselves, but they just don't seem to go together.

Just keep working and move on to the next one...also try to get something besides Fruityloops if that's what you're using.

Mr-green-apple responds:

thx for listening and the good review. ive definetely been working on some mastering and mixing for my next track. it will be loads and loads better than these first tracks. I need to get the FL bible really bad and a drum pad and a midi and a mixer. i dont have the money right now but ill probably be coming out with some wicked stuff this summer.

Very upbeat and catchy

The subtle synth transitions are very cool sounding. Sweet layered melodies too. Not my kind of thing, but still sounds sweet! Maybe could use a little more juice on the drums or something.

Let me know what you think of my latest (Vigilante Superhooker) when you get a chance, always curious what you think dude.

great production

awesome blend of sounds - i love the production. very full-bodied and well shaped. the bass floats smoothly in between the hard hitting drums and lead synths. definately some of the better production i've heard on newgrounds - sounds very professional.

the song itself sounds like it might be something though, but i'm not quite sure. the whole thing kind of sounds like a build up or something, maybe a more well-defined lead synth in parts would sound cool. either way, good job, you obviously know what you're doing.

Helix6 responds:

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't know if I know what I'm doing yet. :)
